As we welcome warmer weather and longer days, spring is the perfect time to refresh and renew, not just in our routines, but in our homes too. Whether you’re preparing your home for sale, settling into a new space, or just trying to create more peace and order, spring cleaning is a chance to declutter and make room for what matters most.

Even better? The items you no longer need can make a big difference right here in our local community. Read on for decluttering tips, a special section on cleaning out your closet, advice on what items are best for donation, and two amazing local organizations that would love your gently used treasures.

Tips for Decluttering Your Home

Decluttering doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Try these simple steps to stay focused and motivated:

  • Start small: Choose one room, or even one drawer, and go from there.

  • Use the 3-box method: Label boxes or bins as Keep, Donate, and Trash. Handle each item only once to make faster decisions.

  • Set a timer: Work in short bursts (try 20-30 minutes) to avoid burnout.

  • Ask yourself the tough questions: Do I use this? Do I love this? Would I buy it again?

  • Get the family involved: Spring cleaning is a team effort! Assign age-appropriate tasks to kids and roommates.

Closet Clean-Out: Where to Start

Closets are notorious for collecting items we haven’t worn in years. Here’s how to streamline your wardrobe and make space:

  • Flip your hangers: Turn all your hangers backwards. When you wear something, flip the hanger the right way. After a few weeks, you’ll easily see which items never get touched.

  • Try it on: If it doesn’t fit, isn’t flattering, or you don’t feel great wearing it—donate it.

  • Stick to seasonal reviews: Declutter your closet twice a year—once in spring and again in fall.

  • Sort by category: Group clothes by type (shirts, pants, shoes, etc.) to see duplicates and identify what you truly need.

  • Don’t forget accessories: Bags, scarves, hats, and shoes can pile up fast. If you haven’t used them in a year, it’s time to let go.

What Makes a Great Donation Item?

When deciding what to donate, think gently used and still useful. Most organizations appreciate:

  • Clean clothing with no stains, rips, or missing buttons

  • Shoes in good condition

  • Working household items and small appliances

  • Toys, books, and games with all parts included

  • Home décor, linens, and kitchenware

Avoid donating:

  • Broken electronics

  • Stained mattresses or furniture

  • Hazardous materials (paint, cleaners, batteries)

  • Items with missing parts

When in doubt, ask: Would I feel good giving this to a friend? If the answer is no, it may be better to recycle or toss.

Support Our Local Community Through Donation

We’re proud to support two local organizations doing amazing work in Camden County:

The Methodist Home

Formerly the Methodist Boys Home, this faith-based organization helps equip at-risk youth and families for a brighter future. They accept gently used items for their Garage Sale Fundraiser, which directly supports the residents and programs at the Home.

Mark your calendars! On Saturday, April 12th from 9am–1pm, the Board of Realtors is hosting a Community Yard Sale at 47 Readdick Avenue in Kingsland. They’re collecting donated items in advance, with all proceeds benefiting local community efforts.

Declutter With Purpose This Spring

Spring cleaning isn’t just about having a tidier space—it’s about creating breathing room and giving your unused items a second life. By donating to local organizations, you're not only simplifying your home, you're supporting neighbors in need.

At Coastal Roots Realty, we’re proud to call this community home. If you're prepping your home for sale, organizing after a move, or just looking to refresh your space, we’re here to help every step of the way.
